The latest play from Tony winner Richard Nelson, Nikolai and the Others, begins performances at Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre on April 4. The off-Broadway premiere, directed by David Cromer, stars Michael Cerveris, John Glover and Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Kathryn Erbe. The show’s official opening night is set for May 6.
Set in Westport, CT in the spring of 1948, Nikolai and the Others follows a close-knit group of Russian emigres who gather for a weekend to eat, drink and talk. Throughout the weekend Nelson is able to reimagine the creation of the historic collaboration between Balanchine (Cerveris) and Stravinsky (Glover), the ballet Orpheus as well as explore the interesting and controversial ways in which American art was founded at the outset of the Cold War.
In addition to Cerveris, Glover and Erbe, Nikolai and the Others features Betsy Aidem, Blair Brown, Anthony Cochrane, Lauren Culpepper, Alvin Epstein, Jennifer B. Grace, Katie Kreisler, Stephen Kunken, Haviland Morris, Dale Place, John Procaccino, Gareth Saxe and Alan Schmuckler.
The show includes set design by Marsha Ginsberg, costume design by Jane Greenwood, lighting design by Ken Billington, sound design by Daniel Kluger and choreography by George Balanchine.
